The Art of Thinking — Why Philosophy Still Matters

This talk, recorded live at The Forum at Q looks at how philosophy shapes everyday life.

Joel said philosophy isn’t just for academics. It’s how we all make sense of the world. It shows up in what we believe, how we act, and the choices we make. He broke it down into three parts:

  • What’s real (metaphysics)

  • How we know anything (epistemology)

  • What we should do (ethics)

We usually don’t notice these ideas. But they shape us anyway.

Joel gave examples from history. He talked about Semmelweis, who showed that washing hands saved lives. His ideas were ignored at the time, and people died. Joel’s point was simple: bad thinking can kill. Good thinking saves lives.

He asked hard questions:
– Where do your ideas come from?
– Have you ever changed your mind?
– Do you trust your own thinking, or are you just repeating what someone told you?

He also made it personal. He spoke about growing up in church and how that shaped his beliefs. Some ideas gave him structure, but others made him doubt himself. He said thinking clearly helped him get that part of his mind back.

Part two of the talk compared child and adult thinking. Children absorb ideas without question. Adults should know how to test ideas, remove the ones that don’t work, and think for themselves.

Joel also warned about emotion taking over when we don’t think clearly. If we let emotions lead, we become reactive. He said thinking isn’t automatic. It’s a skill. You have to train it, like a muscle.

He ended by saying this: to live well, you need to think well. And if we don’t think for ourselves, someone else will do it for us.
